Scales and Sensitivity: An Overview of Arlyn’s Most Sensitive Scales

Do you need a device that can deliver highly precise and accurate measurements? Arlyn Scales manufactures a selection of newly patented Ultra Precision Scales that utilize our own Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) technology, which are capable of calculating and producing precise readings for an affordable price.

Our scales are made to withstand hectic industrial environments. If your business needs a scale able to decipher the smallest fraction of a pound, then we encourage you to look at our collection of Ultra Precision Scales. Our Ultra Precision Bench scales are perfect for counting parts, formulation, and any application in which precision is vital.

SAW Technology: a Breakthrough in Precision and Accuracy

Before Surface Acoustic Wave technology was created, scales mainly operated with two types of weighing technology: Strain Gage and Force Restoration.

Industrial grade Strain Gage scales are known for being on the low end in cost and only modestly accurate. A popular choice for over 50 years, Strain Gage scales calculates weight by measuring change in resistance of a spring element load sensor caused by weight on the scale platform. Unfortunately, overall accuracy is limited, and over time, the spring element within the scale can deform with resultant loss in accuracy.

Force Restoration, on the other hand, or Force Motor as it is also called, were the go-to weighing devices for high accuracy before SAW technology came around. This type of scale measures the weight of objects by calculating the amount of electric current needed to support whatever item is placed on the scale platform. While this method of measurement is very accurate, it is also significantly more expensive than other scale options. Moreover, Force Restoration scales are damaged easily and cannot withhold the weight of objects that exceed maximum capacity. This technology is also not feasible and available when there is a need for measuring heavy loads.

As you can see Strain Gage and Force Restoration scales acquire certain attributes. But we can all agree: a higher quality and more durable scale option was definitely needed. And Arlyn Scales delivered. With our newly patented Surface Acoustic Wave technology, our Ultra Precision Scales do not measure stress or strain. Instead SAW technology measures displacement. Using an all-digital SAW transducer, our Ultra Precision scales deliver 10 times more accuracy and 20 times higher resolution than other industrial scale options.

How Does Surface Acoustic Wave Technology Work?

Inside our SAW scales, there are two transducers: one works as a transmitter, and the second functions as a receiver. When an object is placed on the scale platform, the transmitter releases a bulk wave and sends it to the receiver. Then the signal from the receiver is amplified and applied to the transmitter. This process is repeated and as it is happening, the spring element within the scale bends. The scale digitally measures the wave by seeing how long it takes to travel between the two transducers, and from this can determine the weight of the object on the platform.

Users of our SAW scales will immediately see a digital output reading on the large, LCD display that comes on all of our Ultra Precision scales. And there is no need to convert analog resistance measurements. Our Ultra Precision scales offer 15 different weighing units, including: grams, pounds, ounces, kilograms and more. Our SAW technology is available on our Bench scales and Parts Counting scales, with weight capacities of 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 pounds. By using large loadcell blocks, Arlyn Scales’ scales that are equipped with SAW technology can endure an extra high level of overload and shock. They have an overload capacity of over 250%. By being durable and flexible as to how much weight they can withstand, there is a lesser chance that the scale will need to be repaired or replaced unexpectedly.
