Explosive Environment Scales – ArlynGuard D
$2,409.00
The ArlynGuard D intrinsically safe drum scale combines a low-profile industrial weighing platform, included loading ramp and ArlynGuard hazardous-location weighing electronics for weighing 55-gallon drums, chemical containers and similar vessels in classified industrial environments.
The ArlynGuard D intrinsically safe drum scale gives facilities a purpose-built way to weigh drums where flammable gases, vapors, combustible dust or other hazardous materials may be present. Rather than adapting a general-purpose platform scale to drum handling, Arlyn combines its intrinsically safe ArlynGuard weighing system with a low-profile ramped platform developed specifically for rolling drums and containers onto the weighing surface.
Standard D-series models provide 500 lb or 1,000 lb capacities with either a 30″ x 30″ or 36″ x 36″ platform. In addition, every standard configuration includes a matching 15″-deep loading ramp. Customers can choose aluminum or stainless steel construction to suit different industrial and environmental requirements.
ArlynGuard D Models, Capacities and Platform Sizes
Choosing the correct ArlynGuard D starts with the maximum loaded drum weight and the required platform size. For example, the 500 lb models provide 0.1 lb readability, while the 1,000 lb models provide 0.2 lb readability. Both capacities are available with either platform size.

Designed for Drum Weighing in Hazardous Areas
Industrial facilities routinely use drums for chemicals, solvents, coatings, ingredients, waste materials and other process materials. When those materials create a hazardous classified environment, standard electrical weighing equipment may not be suitable. Therefore, the weighing system must match the requirements of the classified area.
ArlynGuard D provides a dedicated hazardous-location drum weighing solution. Its platform measures only 1 7/8″ high, and the included ramp lets operators roll compatible drums onto the scale instead of lifting them onto an elevated platform.
In addition, the 30″ and 36″ platform sizes accommodate common industrial drums while providing useful space for pails, containers and other vessels that fit safely within the selected platform and capacity.
Intrinsically Safe ArlynGuard System
ArlynGuard D belongs to the ArlynGuard family of intrinsically safe weighing systems. The system supports hazardous classified applications including:
- Class I, II and III, Division 1, Groups A, B, C, D, E, F and G
- Class I, Zone 0, AEx ia IIC (T3 Ta=60C)
- Class I, Division 2, Groups A, B, C and D
- Class II, Division 2, Groups F and G
- Class III, Division 2 indoor hazardous classified locations
Arlyn builds these systems around approved intrinsically safe weighing components, including the MKE-5-IS digital weight indicator system and applicable FM-approved load cell models. However, the exact equipment configuration must match the hazardous-area classification and installation requirements.
For a detailed overview of the available system layouts, see ArlynGuard Intrinsically Safe Scale Configurations.
Low-Profile Platform with Included Loading Ramp
Moving a loaded 55-gallon drum onto a conventional platform can be difficult, especially when the weighing surface sits several inches above the floor. ArlynGuard D addresses this problem with a 1 7/8″ high platform and matching 15″-deep ramp.
As a result, operators can move compatible drums between the floor and weighing platform more easily. Arlyn matches the ramp width to the selected platform: the 30″ platform uses a 30″ x 15″ ramp, while the 36″ platform uses a 36″ x 15″ ramp.
This arrangement works particularly well for drum filling, batching, material consumption and inventory-monitoring applications where operators repeatedly move drums onto and off the scale.
Aluminum or Stainless Steel Construction
Customers can order ArlynGuard D with either an aluminum or stainless steel platform and ramp. Aluminum provides a durable industrial weighing platform at a lower system cost. Stainless steel, meanwhile, offers another construction choice for applications where additional corrosion resistance or environmental durability is preferred.
Multiple stainless steel load sensors measure the load directly through the scale platform. Consequently, the system does not depend on mechanical pivot and lever assemblies to transfer the drum weight to a single sensor.
High Accuracy Industrial Drum Weighing
Standard ArlynGuard D models provide ±0.1% of full-scale accuracy. The 500 lb models display weight in 0.1 lb increments, whereas the 1,000 lb models display weight in 0.2 lb increments.
Importantly, readability and accuracy describe different aspects of scale performance. Readability identifies the smallest weight increment shown by the indicator. Accuracy, by contrast, describes how closely the measured result represents the correct weight under the specified conditions.
Therefore, users should select enough capacity for the fully loaded drum, container and practical operating margin while also considering the displayed readability required by the process.
Battery Operation or Continuous AC Power
Standard ArlynGuard configurations use rechargeable NiMH batteries, allowing the scale to operate without a conventional AC power connection in the hazardous area. The MKE-5-IS uses three supplied 2600 mAh NiMH AA batteries and typically provides approximately 96 hours of operation, depending on the installed options and operating conditions.
Users must change and recharge the batteries in a safe area.
Alternatively, facilities that require continuous operation can select an AC-powered system that uses an intrinsically safe safety barrier. See ArlynGuard Configuration #2 for additional information.
Available ArlynGuard D Upgrades
ArlynGuard D can serve as a straightforward battery-powered drum scale. However, facilities can also connect it to safe-area displays, data systems, printers, alarms, PLCs and process-control equipment. The available functions depend on the selected ArlynGuard configuration.
Power and Safe-Area Displays
For continuous installations, a safety barrier can provide the required separation between hazardous-area equipment and safe-area power or electronics. In addition, customers can add a secondary MKE-5 or Arlyn UpScale display in the safe area when the application requires more advanced communication, workflow or data functions.
Communication and Process Integration
Depending on the selected configuration, ArlynGuard D can communicate with safe-area equipment through serial, analog or network interfaces. Furthermore, supported UpScale configurations can extend the system to industrial protocols and connected data workflows.

Data, Printing and Control Options
For applications that require more than local weight display, the safe-area configuration can extend ArlynGuard D into a larger process system. For instance, a facility can collect weighing records, send weight data to a PLC or use setpoints and relays during a drum-filling operation. Likewise, supported UpScale configurations can add printing, barcode workflows and network-based data functions.
The correct configuration depends on the hazardous-area classification, display location, power source and required communication or control interfaces. Therefore, contact Arlyn Scales if you need help selecting an ArlynGuard D system.

ArlynGuard D vs. ArlynGuard P
ArlynGuard D and ArlynGuard P use the same broader ArlynGuard intrinsically safe system architecture. However, they serve different material-handling requirements.
Choose ArlynGuard D when operators regularly roll drums or similar containers onto and off the scale. Its low-profile platform and included ramp make it the more appropriate drum-weighing configuration.
By comparison, choose the ArlynGuard P intrinsically safe platform scale when the application needs a more general-purpose hazardous-location platform rather than a drum-specific loading arrangement.
Finally, if the application does not require intrinsically safe equipment, see Arlyn’s standard industrial drum scales with loading ramps.
