Details

Need an intrinsically safe scale for weighing drums? The ArlynGuard D combines an intrinsically safe ArlynGuard weighing system with a low-profile platform and included ramp specifically suited for loading and weighing 55-gallon drums and other industrial containers in hazardous locations. Standard models are available in 500 lb and 1,000 lb capacities with 30" x 30" or 36" x 36" platforms.

Designed Specifically for Drum Weighing in Hazardous Areas

Many industrial processes require drums to be weighed where flammable gases, solvent vapors, combustible dust or other potentially hazardous materials may be present. Standard industrial weighing equipment may not be appropriate for these classified locations. The ArlynGuard D intrinsically safe drum scale combines the proven ArlynGuard hazardous-location weighing system with the loading convenience of Arlyn's industrial drum-scale design. The result is a dedicated solution for facilities that need to roll drums directly onto a scale while maintaining an intrinsically safe weighing configuration. Typical applications include chemical manufacturing, coatings and adhesives, pharmaceutical production, specialty manufacturing, waste handling, filling operations and other processes involving hazardous or volatile materials.

Low-Profile Platform with an Included Loading Ramp

A drum scale should be easy to load without requiring operators to lift a heavy container onto the weighing surface. ArlynGuard D platforms are only 1 7/8" high and include a matching 15"-deep ramp. The standard 30" x 30" and 36" x 36" platform sizes provide ample space for common 55-gallon drums, pails and process containers. The open, rail-less platform also allows appropriately sized loads to overhang the platform when necessary. Custom platform dimensions and capacities may also be available for applications involving unusual drum sizes, containers or material-handling requirements.

Intrinsically Safe ArlynGuard Weighing System

ArlynGuard D uses the same intrinsically safe weighing architecture found throughout the ArlynGuard product family. The system is designed for hazardous classified environments including Class I, II and III, Division 1, Groups A through G and Class I, Zone 0, AEx ia IIC applications, subject to the configuration and approval requirements of the installation. ArlynGuard systems use FM-approved weighing components, including the MKE-5-IS digital indicator and approved intrinsically safe load-cell models. Because hazardous-location requirements are application-specific, the final scale configuration should always be selected according to the facility's actual area classification.

Rugged Construction for Industrial Drum Handling

Four stainless steel load sensors are integrated into the scale platform to measure the load directly without mechanical pivots or lever assemblies. The sensors are precision matched and designed for the shock, vibration and uneven loading commonly encountered in industrial environments. Standard ArlynGuard D platforms are available in rugged aluminum construction, with stainless steel construction available for harsher or more corrosive environments.

500 lb and 1,000 lb Drum Scale Capacities

ArlynGuard D is available in two standard weighing ranges:
  • 500 lb capacity with 0.1 lb readability
  • 1,000 lb capacity with 0.2 lb readability
Both capacities are offered with either a 30" x 30" or 36" x 36" platform. The scale provides ±0.1% of full-scale accuracy, while the selected model determines the smallest displayed weight increment.

Battery Operation or Continuous Safe-Area Power

The standard configuration uses rechargeable NiMH batteries so the weighing system can operate without bringing an ordinary AC power source into the hazardous area. Batteries must be recharged in a safe area. For fixed installations or continuous process monitoring, an optional AC-powered configuration with an intrinsically safe safety barrier can supply power from the safe area. This arrangement can also provide a pathway for communication and control signals between the hazardous and safe areas.

PLC, Data Collection and Safe-Area Integration

An intrinsically safe drum scale does not have to operate as an isolated weighing device. Depending on the selected ArlynGuard configuration, weight data can be routed to equipment located in a safe area for process monitoring, recording or automation. Available integration options may include:
  • RS-422 and RS-485
  • RS-232 and USB communication
  • 4-20 mA or voltage analog output
  • Ethernet and Wi-Fi connectivity
  • Modbus RTU / ASCII and Modbus TCP
  • EtherNet/IP
  • PROFINET
  • Setpoint control for filling and batching
  • USB data logging
  • Google Sheets data logging
  • AxChange cloud monitoring
Advanced interfaces typically require a safety barrier and/or a secondary MKE-5 or Arlyn UpScale indicator located in the safe area.
ArlynGuard D or ArlynGuard P?

Choose ArlynGuard D when drums or similar containers will regularly be rolled onto the scale and an integrated ramp is important to the workflow. Choose ArlynGuard P when you need a general-purpose intrinsically safe platform scale and drum-specific loading is not the primary requirement.

Common ArlynGuard D Applications

  • 55-gallon drum weighing
  • Chemical drum inventory monitoring
  • Drum filling and batching
  • Solvent and coating production
  • Hazardous-material processing
  • Waste and recovery operations
  • Ingredient or raw-material consumption monitoring
  • Process vessels and containers within the scale's rated capacity

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an intrinsically safe drum scale?
An intrinsically safe drum scale is a weighing system designed so that its electrical energy is limited to levels appropriate for designated hazardous locations. The ArlynGuard D combines this type of weighing system with a low-profile ramped platform designed specifically for drums and industrial containers.
Can the ArlynGuard D weigh a 55-gallon drum?
Yes. ArlynGuard D was designed around industrial drum-weighing applications. Standard platforms are available in 30" x 30" and 36" x 36" sizes with 500 lb or 1,000 lb capacities.
Does the ArlynGuard D include a ramp?
Yes. The standard ArlynGuard D configuration includes a 15"-deep loading ramp matched to the platform width. The low 1 7/8" platform height helps operators roll drums onto and off the weighing surface.
Is an intrinsically safe drum scale the same as an explosion-proof drum scale?
The terms are sometimes used interchangeably when searching for hazardous-location equipment, but they describe different protection approaches. ArlynGuard D uses an intrinsically safe weighing design that limits available electrical energy. The correct equipment must always be selected according to the hazardous-area classification and installation requirements.
Can ArlynGuard D operate continuously without batteries?
Yes. An optional externally powered configuration uses a safety barrier between the hazardous and safe areas to provide continuous power. Standard battery-operated configurations are also available.
Can drum weight be sent to a PLC or control system?
Yes. Depending on the selected safe-area configuration, ArlynGuard systems can provide analog, serial, Ethernet and industrial-network interfaces including Modbus, EtherNet/IP and PROFINET. The required interface components are located or isolated according to the selected hazardous-area configuration.
Can ArlynGuard D be used with totes or unusually sized containers?
The standard D-series platforms are optimized for drums and similar containers. Other containers may be weighed when their dimensions and loaded weight are appropriate for the selected platform and capacity. Contact Arlyn Scales for custom platform sizes or capacities when a standard 30" or 36" platform is not suitable.
