When certain manufacturing processes are put into practice, especially those that involve the formulating of various liquids and chemicals, it’s often necessary to determine and control the flow rate of these chemical ingredients. Furthermore, by automating the control and measurement of the flow rate, companies can better control their inventory and precisely dispense more material as needed.
At Arlyn Scales, we offer a number of industrial scales that feature our flow rate measurement program, allowing our customers to quickly and easily control the flow of certain materials, all with the help of one of our highly reliable and precise scales.
In business for more than 30 years, Arlyn Scales is a virtual fixture in the weighing industry. All of our scales are built using our in-house technology, which includes our internationally patented Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) scales.
Why Purchase a Scale from Arlyn Scales?
When purchasing a scale from Arlyn Scales, you’re tapping in to our over 3 decades of experience in the industry. In the last 30 years, we’ve seen a number of other scale companies come and go. We’ve remained a fixture in the scale industry, because of a variety of key tenets:
-
U.S.A Based Manufacturing –
All of our scales are not only built in the United States, but designed here as well. Our factory is located in East Rockaway, New York on Long Island, where all of our scales are designed and built. We don’t believe in shipping our manufacturing jobs overseas. We’d rather provide a higher quality scale to our customers than run the risk of quality control issues due to overseas manufacturing.
-
Factory Direct Approach –
Another misconception in the scale industry is that you have to buy a scale directly from a distributor as opposed to a manufacturer. At Arlyn Scales, we don’t agree with this philosophy. We sell all of our scales factory direct to our customers.
-
Top Notch Customer Service –
Because all of our scales are made right here in the U.S.A., we’re able to offer the highest level of customer service to our customers. Typically, if you were to call into our offices with an issue, you’d be talking to someone who may have actually built your scale, as opposed to someone that is literally thousands of miles away from where your scale was actually produced.
-
High End Features –
Because of our unique design and manufacturing processes, we’re able to offer high end features at competitive prices. One of the features that is used by many of our industrial customers is our flow rate measurement program.
How to Calculate Flow Rate?
Imagine a customer places a full chemical tank on a scale and connects the tank to a process through a hose. The process may require the system to dispense liquid at a specific rate, such as one gallon per minute. This rate is known as the flow rate.
Arlyn’s Flow Rate Measurement Program calculates flow rate by measuring how much weight leaves the tank over a specific period of time. For example, assume that one gallon of the liquid weighs eight pounds. The customer places the tank on an Arlyn 320D scale with a 500-pound capacity and a readability of 0.1 pound.
If the scale initially reads 500.0 pounds and drops to 498.0 pounds after 15 seconds, the tank has lost 2.0 pounds in one-quarter of a minute. At that rate, the tank would lose eight pounds in one minute. Because eight pounds equals one gallon in this example, the calculated flow rate is one gallon per minute.
Using Arlyn Ultra Precision Scales to Measure Flow Rate Faster
Some applications require the system to calculate and update the flow rate as quickly as possible. Arlyn Ultra Precision Scales are ideal for these applications because their higher resolution allows them to detect much smaller changes in weight.
Using the same example, replace the Arlyn 320D with the SAW-KXL scale. The SAW-KXL also has a 500-pound capacity, but it provides a readability of 0.005 pound. This gives it 20 times more resolution than the Arlyn 320D.
Because the SAW-KXL can detect smaller weight changes, it can calculate and update the flow rate much sooner. Under the conditions described above, it could determine the flow rate in less than one second instead of waiting approximately 15 seconds for a measurable change.
Additional Features of Arlyn’s Ultra Precision Scales
Aside from calculating flow rate quickly and accurately, Arlyn Ultra Precision Scales offer a wide range of features for industrial weighing, process monitoring, and data collection applications. Key features include:
Arlyn UpScale Touchscreen Indicator
The Arlyn UpScale indicator combines an Android-powered IPS touchscreen with proprietary Arlyn software designed specifically for industrial weighing applications. Its intuitive interface makes it easy to view weight readings, configure scale functions, monitor processes, and access communication features. The rugged, water-resistant enclosure and responsive touchscreen make the UpScale well suited for demanding industrial environments.
Superior Measurement Technology
Traditional strain-gage scales measure the deformation of a spring element under load. Arlyn Ultra Precision Scales instead use patented Surface Acoustic Wave, or SAW, transducers to measure extremely small amounts of displacement.
This technology delivers exceptional resolution and accuracy without requiring users to sacrifice weighing capacity. As a result, SAW scales can detect small changes in material weight more quickly, making them particularly effective for flow-rate measurement, batching, filling, inventory monitoring, and other precision applications.
Flexible Data-Transfer Options
Arlyn scales can transmit weight and process data through a variety of communication interfaces. Available options include USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, RS-232, and removable USB storage.
These communication capabilities allow customers to connect their scales to computers, programmable logic controllers, data-logging systems, cloud-based platforms, and other process-control equipment. Depending on the system configuration, the scale can support real-time monitoring, automated recordkeeping, and flow-rate control.
